Lipreading Practice

Masks & Bob the Cat

28 June 2020

With all the news of how many deaths there are around the world, you may wonder why I am drawing your attention to the death of Bob the Cat.  He was a beautiful ginger cat, who adopted James Bowen, a recovering addict and who together with James had many adventures. They helped to raise awareness of the problems of homelessness. James says that Bob saved his life. James used to busk and the cat went with him. Bob wore a scarf and together they busked and sold the BIg Issue. Eventually James wrote the story of how Bob saved him and of their life together. It was made into a film. More stories followed. James is still raising awareness and fundraisng. I met them both at a fundraising dinner at The House of Lords. What a wonderful story and how sad that Bob is no longer with us. He will be greatly missed, especailly by James.

On Friday I ventured out to collect my spectacles. It was the first time that I had worn a mask or tried to speak to anyone who was wearing a mask!  I was so hot and uncomfortable wearing the mask and I had a little trouble with my breathing but we must follow this at the moment to keep us all safe.  Trying to understand what the young lady was saying from behind her mask and perspex barrier proved very difficult. NO LIPREADING!  There is a Real need for masks that are transparent so that those of who need to, can lipread. If you have had similar experiences and would like to help to raise awarenesa about this problem, several of the hearing loss charities are running campaigns. I would like to draw your attention to the Campaign organised by the National Deaf Children's Society. More information can be found on their website. Thank you for your support.

I hope you have a good week and stay safe and keep well!!
